Upper Mimico Creek Aquatic Habitat Restoration
Project Introduction
Business Unit: Geomorphic Solutions
Project Name: Upper Mimico Creek Aquatic Habitat Restoration
Client: Toronto and Region Conservation Authority
Duration of Project: 2006 permitting, first phase 2007
Location: Upper Mimico Creek, Airport Road, Brampton, Ontario
Objective and Description
Objective: Geomorphic Solutions was retained by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to develop an aquatic habitat restoration project along 1.7km of Upper Mimico Creek in Brampton, Ontario. Concrete mattressing lined the streambed and areas of the floodplain, resulting in limited channel morphology and native substrate along large sections of the creek. Several instream barriers also fragmented the aquatic system and prevented fish from accessing available habitat. The restoration design aimed to provide greater variability with respect to topography and vegetation on the floodplain, to improve the terrestrial and aquatic habitat, and enhance storm water retention and detention functions. The project will result in a healthier, more productive ecosystem.
