Water Resources Management

Water Resource Management is the art and science of understanding the quality and quantity of surface water produced after rainfall reaches the ground of the watershed. Hydrology is the understanding of the rainfall cycle itself, whereas hydraulics is the understanding of the movement of the surface runoff along the ground and into the receiving streams. Water Resource Management accounts for numerous types of water related investigations such as: flood control, water quality treatment, creation of water budgets, stormwater management analyses, floodplain mapping, and the computer simulation of the conveyance capacity of culverts and bridges.

Computer models are used to assess and understand the potential impact of changes in the surface water flow regime within a watershed as a result of a change in land use, for example, changing from agricultural use to an urban development. The models help us analyze the benefits of various measures to mitigate, and ultimately, select the preferred solutions. These solutions often include source controls, green technologies, conveyance controls and hybrid stormwater management facilities.
